Know what each search metric actually describes
Impressions indicate that a result appeared for a search; clicks indicate that someone selected it. Neither metric says by itself whether the visitor was in the service area, had the right need or became a customer. Average position is an aggregate that can vary by query, device and location, so it should be interpreted with care.
Use the metrics to identify questions worth investigating. A page with relevant impressions but few clicks may need a more accurate title or description. A page with clicks but no enquiries may have an intent mismatch or conversion problem. These are hypotheses to test, not automatic explanations.
Define lead quality with the sales team
Agree on what counts as a qualified enquiry: service needed, geography served, reachable contact information and a plausible project. Use a consistent definition in the CRM or lead log. Record outcomes such as contacted, suitable, proposal sent or closed, while limiting access to personal information.
If the business cannot connect a lead to its source, improve the tracking process before making strong claims about channel performance. Use privacy-appropriate analytics settings and tell visitors what information is collected. Avoid using raw form counts as the only measure when spam and duplicate submissions are common.
Report context with every number
A useful report names the date range, property, country or city, device filters, traffic channel and conversion definition. Explain whether figures are year-over-year, month-over-month or compared with a campaign baseline. Annotate redesigns, tracking changes, seasonal closures and new service launches.
Separate branded and non-branded queries when possible. A rise in people searching directly for the business is different from discovery among people who did not know it. Both may matter, but they answer different questions about awareness and acquisition.
Connect measurement to a decision
End the report with a short action list: what changed, what evidence supports the interpretation, what remains uncertain and who owns the next step. Avoid impressive-looking totals without an explanation of their relevance. A smaller number of qualified enquiries may be more useful than a large volume of mismatched sessions.
Review the result after a consistent period and decide whether to keep, revise or stop the work. Do not report millions of impressions, visits or leads unless the source, date range and definition are verified. Honest measurement is more useful to the business than a dramatic number without context.
Practical checklist
- Separate impressions, clicks, visits, enquiries, qualified leads and sales.
- Define lead quality and connect submissions to the CRM where appropriate.
- Show date range, geography, channel and tracking changes.
- Finish reports with a decision, owner and known uncertainty.
In short
Impressions are an awareness signal, not a business result. Connect search data to visitor actions and sales outcomes before making growth claims.
